Let’s be honest – everyone likes to be treated the way Smeagol treats the Ring! Fine, not all the time and not by everyone, maybe not even so obsessed… Fine, not this way, but everyone likes to feel special, to be a star, even just for a while. We all know the cliche rule in the field of customer care: The Customer is always right! The Customer is a king! And there are times we have to be treated like kings so we can say, “My dear great-grandson, let me tell you a story about this magnificent restaurant I visited once. I felt like for them at this moment there was no one more important than me! This marvelous place…” Or only to know what the best is and thereby to have the ability to compare the services we receive.
There are many ways to make someone feels special. In this article, we won’t cover the romantic approach, but some methods to impress the people with you; ways to forget even the boring everyday life for a while. Ways that all the restaurants, cafes, resorts can offer. We will give you some tips on how to provide an experience that will make your customers or friends want to come back, maybe with more friends, to inspire them to tell all the people they know and even strangers how it was. And some of them might even write an article about the magic time they spent. No matter if we are in a foreign country or our home town, the rules always apply. So let’s check some of them below.
They know you
It is very pleasing when you go for dinner at a fancy restaurant, and the staff welcomes you by name: “Good evening, Mr. John! It’s nice to see you again…” You might feel very special. But, of course, this will be only if:
1.Your name is John.
2.That is the name you told your companions.
3.You haven’t told your official girlfriend, “Let’s try this new restaurant I have just seen today for the first time.”
4.You feel ok the people around to know who John is. (YOU! You are John!)
(Note to the staff: Do not behave weirdly! If John is really coming for the first time, don’t let him know you know his name. Otherwise, the surprise might not be so pleasant for him. And therefore, the comments about you can’t be as warm as wished. Only if he is not scared or too stressed to write a comment after that, of course.)
They offer you things that are not on the menu list
Try something new and special for you:
1.A wine not on the wine list menu or a bottle of wine without a label.
You could experience this mostly in the wine estates and chateaus. There is almost always a vintage or a limited edition you wouldn’t find anywhere else but only by them and only now.
2.A special dish for a unique wine, for the special occasion, for the special you.
I will most probably always remember the small family restaurant in the new town of Nessebar, Bulgaria. There, the hosts saved for me some of the roasted chicken they made for their family celebration on their day off. So lovely from their side!
3.Every year, there is an event in Sofia, Bulgaria, called “Sofia Restaurant Week.”
For seven days, a couple of restaurants and cafes offer special menus that you can’t order after that. I am sure this “Restaurant Week” event exists not only here, so check for such opportunities in your city or the cities you will visit.
This event reminds me of the “once in a time” marketing strategy: a restaurant existing only for a week or a month. It was in the news, and the list with reservations was full. But, unfortunately, the restaurant is already gone, and the memory of it will vanish with the last people who remember it (unless someone writes it down for the next generations.)
The outstanding view
Yeah, the drinks or the dishes might not be the perfect ones, but man, What a View! There are many places where we pay not only for what we eat or drink but primarily for what we see: a café facing the Eiffel Tower in Paris, a restaurant on the top of a tower in Hong Kong (if a random tourist from the other side of the Earth knows that the man watching through the window is you, be sure, you will pay for it.)
The unique place
A café in the original Sacher Hotel or a restaurant in the Belvedere palace in Vienna (Austria); a bar in a cave in Mellieha (Malta); or a cave restaurant in Puglia (Italy)… It doesn’t matter if you are eating the famous Sacher cake in the place where it was invented, or if you are in one of the cafes in Paris, where Hemingway, F. Scott Fitzgerald, and Sartre used to hang out – you know what you are paying for.
Yes, we will depend on the staff for some of those ways – they might not have anything different to offer than on the list. They might even have no right to provide other things, no matter what. For others, you might lack money – I am not sure I would work a week to buy myself a coffee watching a beautiful monument/palace somewhere in the world. There might be other places around I can visit, from where I will have the same view. Yes, there will be many other people, so I will have to go away fast, so other poor people can have the opportunity to see this beauty. Still, it is a choice everyone has to make for their own – what is essential for you in life or at this moment: The money or to stay for a while along with the view. So go for it, pay, and enjoy – this is why we are here!
And you know – in the end, there are the best lessons!
Best of all – small things make us happy
For this one, you don’t need a lot of money, and your experience doesn’t depend on the staff: To feel like a King, go with a Queen! Or with another king, or just with someone to share the moment. As we all are “social animals,” we tend to look for someone to share with – in bad times, we feel better to have someone with us; in good times, sharing the joy multiplies the good feelings. But, of course, you don’t need someone else to make you feel worthy – don’t you remember? You are a King!
Extra special advice for life
And the most important advice: Be happy! And make others feel happy too! Traveling and seeing the world is a lovely way to provoke you to ask yourself about the meaning of life, about the price and the efforts, about destiny, about all the choices we make. We hope those questions, maybe even answered sometimes, will be a reason for you to become a better You, on the way to the best You possible.
P.S. The pursuit of your happiness will not make you as happy as the act of making someone else happy. Think about it! And let’s make tomorrow better than today!
